Phyllostachys nigra 'Bory' differs from nigra by growing larger, taller and more upright. Culms emerge green and with age develop blotches or spots of black and brown or purple, never completely black. This bamboo is an attractive ornamental. The culms are used for furniture and crafts. First introduced in the U.S. by David Fairchild in 1902 under the name 'Madaradake.'
