Phyllostachys bambusoides 'tanakae' bamboo has green culms marked with elliptical purplish-brown spots giving them a striking appearance. The spots are caused by the bacteria, Asteriella hiugensis, each spot shows concentric circles. 'Tanakae' is the hardiest form of all bambusoides types, but in severe winters some damage can occur. It has very good wood quality and splits well. Shoots have a bitter taste which is preferred by certain cultures. Used extensively as a garden ornamental.
