Tranquillans is the only species of Hibanobambusa. This bamboo has the 2 branches per node of a Phyllostachys and the large leaves of a Sasa and is a natural hybrid between Sasa Veitchii and Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' that flowered at the same time near the start of the 1900s. The leaves can grow to 10 inches long by 1 1/4 inches wide.
The Shiroshima form appeared 3 years after Hibanobambusa t. Kimmei flowered in 1974. Shiroshima has strikingly attractive leaves, variegated in cream and white stripes of varying widths which sometimes show shades of pink or purple when young. The variegated colors persist throughout the year.
Very rare.
